CIVIL REGISTRATION MONTH: Registration centers in Davao malls in February

In celebration of the National Civil Registration Month, the Davao City Civil Registrar’s Office (CCRO) will be putting up centers in some malls for the entire month of February as part of the campaign for the timely registration of births and other civil document concerns.
Assistant City Civil Registrar Juliet Gasatan said that inquiries on civil registrations will also be entertained at the centers.
“For this week, we will be in SM Ecoland, next week we will be in Abreeza and then on the third week, we will be in SM Lanang,” said Gasatan.
She said the CCRO will also put up mobile registration centers in such far-flung areas as Marilog, Paquibato, and Toril under the campaign “#napapanahongCRVS.”
February was designated as Civil Registration Month under Proclamation No. 682 issued by then President Corazon Aquino on January 28, 1991.
The CCRO – together with the Philippine Statistics Authority Region 11 – also urged Dabawenyos to take advantage of the centers and make timely registration of vital events in their lives, such as birth, marriage, and death.
Ruben Abaro Jr., the PSA officer-in-charge, said timely registration of life events is not only for the benefit of the person registering but also for the “planners” of the government.
“Civil registry documents are documents wherein we can generate statistics. Children born this year, six years after, we will know how many of them will go to school. That is when the government can make an estimation of how many teachers or how many classrooms do we need after six years,” he said.
Abaro said registration of deaths is also vital in order for government agencies, such as the Department of Health, to know what diseases caused the certain deaths.
But Abaro said the reality was that three percent of the country’s population – mainly from the indigenous communities – remained to be unregistered and this is what the PSA has been trying to address. CIO
